No Wimpy Christians!

Victor Folkert

READ : Judges 1:1-8

I hope you have finished eating; Judges can get rather gory! (Let’s hope no one makes this into a movie there is too much violence in the media already!) Why the violence? There are two explanations in the Bible:

  1. The Canaanites got what they deserved. Adoni-Bezek was treated as he treated others. The nations of Canaan were also destroyed because of their sinfulness (see Gen. 15:16.)

  2. God had made a covenant with Abraham, which would lead to the salvation of the world in Jesus. That covenant could not be fulfilled without God’s people entering the promised land.

What is the lesson of this passage for us? Certainly we are not called to violence! (Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight.”) What are we called to do for our God? Are we called to defeat the negative spirit circulating around the edges of our church fellowship? Are we called to resist the creeping influence of glitzy TV? Are we called to root out the small compromises that can so easily be tolerated?

Wimpy Christians disappoint God and miss His blessings. Judges calls us to join in the battle for the right, with courage and commitment.

Jesus Christ, You overcame the powers of evil; grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour. Amen.
