A Taste of Deliverance

Victor Folkert

READ : Judges 15:1-20

Samson is not a nice man! His idea of getting even with the Philistines is petty and wrong. The only thing we can say is that the Philistines are just as bad.

Yet look what God does for Samson! He sends His Spirit to give him supernatural strength, so that Samson can kill 1,000 men using only the jawbone of a donkey. Then, He takes pity on a tired and thirsty (but complaining!) Samson, and gives him water from His own personal spring.

What has Samson done to deserve this? Very little! God is using Samson to give relief to His people. God must have really wanted to help His people, to use a man like Samson!

At the same time, Samson makes us desire a deliverer who is truly good, who in every aspect of his life shows the goodness and power of God. Jesus is that one:

Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. In his name the nations will put their hope.

Matthew 12:18-21

Jesus, we are awed by the goodness You revealed. Make us good like You. Amen.
