READ : 1 Peter 2:1-12
The world of Judges seems strange. Everything is so Old Testament: the enemies are pagan nations to be killed, the results of sin are famine and bondage, and the results of obedience are prosperity and freedom. What does this have to do with life in 1995?
Yet Judges puts in bold relief important truths we often forget:
- We are God’s chosen people: holy and set apart. We need to act holy and lead others in a life of holiness.
- We have an inheritance, given to us by God Himself. Yet every day we must claim it, or we will miss its benefits.
- We are doing battle for God against a pagan culture which continually threatens to swallow us up.
By the grace of God, we have greater resources. The mercy of God is revealed in Jesus our Savior. Our final victory is waiting for us in heaven. We receive the Holy Spirit with a depth unknown even to the most impressive judges.
What a privilege to be the chosen people of God in a pagan world! And what a challenge to claim our blessings in Christ each day!
Lord, help us to see ourselves as You see us: holy, blessed, chosen to represent You. Make us strong in our battles, wise in our judgments, and faithful in our response to Your Spirit. Through Christ, our Strength. Amen.
