READ : 1 Samuel 1:21-28
Hannah desired to have a child. 1 Samuel 1 describes Hannah agonizing in prayer and making an agreement with God. If He would allow her to conceive, she would give the child back to His service. God did give Hannah and Elkanah a child and she kept her covenant. Samuel was raised in the temple of Jerusalem, serving his life as judge, prophet and priest.
Children are gifts from God. Children add to the generations, a way of continuing ourselves. Children in families also can be part of continuing the gospel message. Hannah acknowledged her responsibility when she said, “for this child I have prayed.” She fulfilled those responsibilities as well.
What is it we pray for our children? I wonder if we would publicly offer our child into God’s service as Hannah did, or stand up in church to pray for our child’s salvation. When children are presented for baptism, we in the congregation covenant to be part of their family support, to be the spiritual extended family. What a comfort to know that many people will care and encourage children and parents. This is one of the things parents need.
Heavenly Father, for this child we have prayed and we thank You for answering that prayer. There are times when we wonder if we have the strength to continue on, to even pray. Thank you for many who support us. Lead our children to Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
