He Will Return

John Maassen

READ : Matthew 24:3-8, 42-44

Others may debate the theories and details of Christ’s eventual return. We can only emphasize anew that He is coming back! What a comfort this was to Jesus’ first followers. They had been shaken by the response of the religious leaders to their Master’s revolutionary teachings. Those whom they had always trusted were rejecting Him. But He assures them that together they will be victorious. Despite periods of tribulation, He will come back to judge us and to bring history to its climax. He adds, “He who endures to the end will be saved.”

Christ and His people are under attack today too. As I write this, a newspaper reports a public university’s reluctance to hire a certain well-known coach because of his Christian activity! Rejection of Christ’s rule is as real as we approach the twenty-first century as it was in the first. But His promise to return as King comforts us who endure in our faithfulness.

But we are warned as well. We must remain faithful! Only God knows when Christ is coming. But He will indeed return! Like sentries on duty we are to be ready. So, we have the joy of anticipation and the responsibility of preparation. He comes to purge His creation of its wickedness. He comes to pass judgment on us. Even so! Come Lord Jesus!

“The King shall come when morning dawns and light and beauty brings: Hail, Christ the Lord! Your people pray, come quickly, King of Kings!” Amen.
