Have You Checked Your Oil?

John Maassen

READ : Matthew 25:1-13

I’m old enough to remember when motor oil had to be changed every 1,000 miles. And you might expect an expensive overhaul after only 30,000! Today we don’t worry about oil levels much. Some manufacturers suggest changing every 7,500 miles and I have a car with 126,000 miles on it to which I don’t add a drop between changes!

But we do need to be concerned about our “spiritual oil supply”! That’s what Jesus meant by the oil in the lamps of the maidens. Five had forgotten to check it. So they missed the bridegroom, Jesus.

Do you know that modern motor oil is not just “oil,” it is a compound? So is this “oil of preparedness.” The first ingredient is faith. Faith connects us personally with the saving power of our Savior. “And without faith it is impossible to please him.”

Another additive is lovingkindness. It’s the guarantee of our faith. Aged John in his first letter writes, “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren” (1 John 3:14).

But the base of this oil of preparedness is the Holy Spirit. Oil has always symbolized Him. He is the giver of light. Without His illumination there can be no saving faith. Without His beacon we do not know how to do good. Without Him we live and die in eternal darkness. Have you checked your oil lately?

Dear God. Keep me from ruining the engine of my spirit. Give me oil for my life, I pray. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
