New Life

READ : Ephesians 2:1-10

We followed the Ranger down the trail to the Narrows deep inside the Canyon at Zion. We listened with interest as he pointed out many things along the way. At one spot he stopped us and drew our attention to some brown, shriveled-up, dead-looking moss clinging to the canyon wall. We could easily have passed by without noticing it.

Our guide took an empty can. I thought he was going to give us a lecture on litter. Instead, he stooped down to the stream and filled the can with water. He poured some of it on a bit of moss, and instant green! We gasped at what seemed like a miracle. The walls of the canyon are so steep that when it rains, the water only touches the sides momentarily, and so this moss was created to open its pores wide to quickly absorb water. Instantaneously the chlorophyll goes to work to turn the moss green and what appeared to be dead had come alive!

We really were dead until through Christ we were made alive. This is a miracle! We are alive in Christ, and the Holy Spirit living in us makes us alive to many things. Alive, we are more aware of every little thing around us. We can see beauty in many things. Aware of the dignity of life, we can see beauty in everyone, even in ourselves. Miracle of miracles, God loves us as we are. Christ’s death gives us new life!

We praise You, God, for the gift of new abundant life which is available to each one of us! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
