READ : Deuteronomy 26:1-11
One November Sunday our bulletin listed a Moment for Mission by Earl. Earl walked to the front of the sanctuary and gave a wordless challenge to us for the Thanksgiving and Advent seasons.
With a tape measure, he silently measured the communion table and pantomimed extending the table by pulling on each end. Several elders joined him and received broken loaves of bread which they held out toward the congregation as a symbol of extending the table. Our bulletins contained inserts listing numerous opportunities for giving in the weeks ahead as one way to extend the love of God.
If you have been making a gratitude list (suggested November 1), go over that list today. We have been blessed by God as the Israelites were. This is a good time to check our attitude of gratitude.
One way to show our gratitude to God is by extending His table and reaching out to others who are not blessed as much as we are physically or spiritually.
Sit down today alone or with your family and plan to whom you can give “a cup of cold water” in Jesus’ name. How can you tell of God’s love and show it in a special way between now and Christmas? Suggestions for giving are everywhere at this time of year. All we need to do is choose and then act.
Lord, let every day be a day of thanks-giving and of thanks-living. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
