The Coming One Has Come

READ : Malachi 4:1-6

The whole Old Testament is a prelude to Christmas, to the birth of the One promised by God for centuries. In the Old Testament, God chose a people, the nation of Israel. They were given prophets, priests and kings to lead them. These leaders were, in most cases, dedicated to their office by anointing, pouring oil on them. Often the priests and kings, and in some cases the prophets, were a disappointment. As we move through the Old Testament there are increasing promises that God will send a great leader who will succeed where they failed. He will provide the deliverance from evil so desperately needed.

The Anointed One, in the Hebrew language, is the Messiah. The Greek translation is the Christ. He is the One who will come to rescue His people from all that afflicts them. Here in the last book of the Old Testament, this promise of a coming One reaches a climax.“The sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings” (v. 2). When this great deliverer comes God’s people will be rescued. The message of Christmas is that the Coming One has come. The One we all need so desperately has arrived. He is this child in the manger. Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the prophet-priest-king who is in the process of solving our deepest problems, meeting our deepest needs. Turn to Him, He will help you.

Father, we praise You that the hopes and fears of all the years are met by this child in the manger. In His name. Amen.
