READ : Luke 1:26-38
An angel approaches a girl named Mary. She too is shocked by the angel. When we are confronted by a new situation, most of us are afraid. Maybe it is a new school, maybe a new job, maybe a new illness. Again and again God says to people in the Bible, “Do not be afraid” (v. 30). The night after I had open heart surgery was a horrible night, but all night I repeated the words of Scripture, “Do not be afraid.” These words got me through the most difficult experience of my life. If you are a believer and are going through some difficulty, God is saying to you, “Do not be afraid.”
Mary is told she will have a son who will be the Son of God (v. 32). She was chosen for this special role in the saving plan God has for His people. But there is much that still needs to be done in thekingdom of God. If you are a believer, God has chosen you to serve Him in the unique way that only you are able to. You are chosen to be a blessing to your family, your church, your neighborhood. Hear His call. Notice Mary’s response. “I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (v. 38). She doesn’t say, “I’m too busy to teach Sunday school.” She doesn’t say, “I am too tired to bring a meal to a sick neighbor.” God chooses her for a special ministry and she says, “YES.”
Father, we recognize we are saved to serve. Help us to do well what You have chosen us to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
