Spirit-Filled Speech

READ : Luke 1:39-45

Mary and Elizabeth were related. So Mary visits her relative. As soon as she arrives, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit. Prior to Pentecost, the Spirit filled people occasionally. Since Pentecost, every Christian can be filled with the Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit means turning your life over to His direc- tions. When we are born again by the Spirit, He enters our hearts, never to leave. But He does not always fill us. We read that the disciples were filled with the Spirit at Pentecost, but a few chapters later they pray and they are filled anew. Every morning we ought to pray to be emptied of self and filled with the Spirit. It will be well for us that we begin the day in His control. Being filled with the Spirit, He will guide us through the day which isfilled with circumstances where we need such guidance.

In Scripture we read that when people were filled with the Spirit they were able to speak with spiritual power. When I gradu- ated from high school, I was voted the second most bashful boy in a large class. When God called me to preach, I said to Him, “You know how shy I am.” But He said, “When I call someone, I enable them to do what I want.” Praying constantly to be filled with the Spirit, this shy boy has been preaching to hundreds of people almost every week for 48 years! If I can do it, you can do it.

Father, empty us of self and fill us with Your Spirit, enabling us to speak for You. For Christ’s sake. Amen.
