Mary's Song

READ : Luke 1:46-56

God enabled Mary to express herself in wonderful poetry. Her song does not focus on herself but on God and the wonderful things He is doing for her. She says, “My soul magnifies the Lord” (v. 46). We have all used magnifying glasses. They make something small larger. But God is great and we cannot make Him greater. Ah, but the world does not realize His greatness. It is our task so to live and so to speak that people around us may realize a little of how great God it. He is great, great in His wisdom, great in His power, great in His love. We cannot magnify Him by making Him greater, but we can be the glass through which people can see how great God is. That is the calling of every Christian.

Mary was a peasant girl among a people who were under the heelof powerful Rome. God just loves to use humble people. Mary says of God, “He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree” (v. 52). That is a principle revealed through- out Scripture. Pride is one of the greatest sins, and spiritual pride is the worst form of that sin. We have every reason to be humble. We are frail creatures of clay. So much is beyond our control. Any good qualities we have are gifts from God. Let us seek to be humble, and be careful not to be proud of our humility.

Father, will You enable us to be more humble, and to show the world how great You are. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
