Birth of John the Baptist

READ : Luke 1:57-66

Elizabeth gives birth to a son. Her extended family shares in her joy at the birth of this miracle child. God tells us to weep with those who weep and to rejoice with those who rejoice. It is usually more difficult to do the latter, to be really glad when something good happens to a relative. Jealousy is such a natural sin. May God give us the grace to be happy when good things happen to others. That is not as easy as it sounds.

Choosing a name for a child is a complex decision. I smiled when frequently I visited a new mother in the hospital and the parents had not yet chosen a name. They had known they would need a name for months. Here all the relatives get in on the act, but they are overruled by the parents who have chosen the name John. We mustdistinguish between this John, John the Baptist, and the author of this book, John the apostle.

Notice the question, “What then will this child be?” (v. 66). That is a question which is posed concerning your child as well as the child of Zechariah and Elizabeth. From the human perspective, what a child becomes depends on environment and personal decision. You cannot decide for your child, but you are the most important part of his or her environment. Your example is a key factor in the future of your child.

Father, help us to be good parents. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
