READ : Luke 2:22-35
Mary and Joseph obeyed the Law of God. It required bringing an offering a certain number of days after the birth of the child. We know they were poor because a more expensive offering was required of those able to pay for it. An old man named Simeon enters the picture. He is described as “righteous and devout” (v. 25). Today we are impressed with people who are clever or rich or famous, but such things are not important to God. He is looking for people who are devout. If those are the kind of people God is looking for, that’s the kind of people we ought to be.
People had been waiting for Christ for centuries. Simeon had been promised by God that the long- awaited Messiah would come in his lifetime. The Spirit led this old man every step of the way. Hewill also lead us if we really want such leading. He will not lead people who want their own way. Simeon is inspired to see that this baby is the Messiah and that He had come not only to rescue Israel, but also people from every nation. Again we see the mission theme. What a privilege to grow up in a Christian family. Young man, young lady, Christ came to earth for you. Have you received Him as your Savior? Your future depends on how you respond to Christ. But the whole world needs the message of Christ also.
Father, lead people near and far into a saving relationship with Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name. Amen.
