READ : Luke 7:11-17
G. A. Studdert-Kennedy was an English chaplain in the armed forces during World War I. He came to believe that life’s most basic question is, “What is God like?” This revelation came to him while visiting a wounded soldier in a hospital. “What I want to know,” said the soldier, “is what is God like? I never really thought about it much before the war,” he continued. “I simply took it for granted. But now it is different. When I am transferred into a new battalion, the first thing I want to know is what the colonel is like. He bosses the show, and it makes a lot of difference to me what sort of a chap he is. Now I’m in the battalion of humanity. I want to know what the Colonel of this world is like. I want to know what is God like.”
Jesus came to show us what God is like. He came to settle thatquestion once and for all time. Through what Jesus said and by what Jesus did, He revealed that God is love and that people matter to God.
As Jesus’ heart “went out” to the widow from Nain who mourned the loss of her only son, so, too, will the heart of God go out to us in the midst of our heartache and sorrow. God will come alongside to comfort and care for us. Spread the good news: people matter to God. You matter to God. He will never let you down; He will never let you go!
Heavenly Father, help me to be alert to Your loving, comforting presence in the midst of my every need. Amen.
