READ : Luke 14:1-11
A successful executive and his wife were out for a drive. Running low on gas, they stopped at a dumpy looking gas station with only one pump. While the executive went inside to pay the bill, he noticed that his wife and the gas station attendant were absorbed in conversation as if they were old friends. Driving away, he asked her if she knew the fellow. She had known him quite well. They had gone to high school together many years before and had dated seriously for over 10 months. The executive bragged, “Boy, were you lucky I came along. Because if you’d married him you’d be the wife of a gas station attendant instead of the wife of an important chief executive officer.” His wife replied, “My dear, if I had married him, he’d be the chief executive officer and you’d be the gas station attendant.” Humbled! The other side to Jesus’ equation is that “those who humble themselves will be exalted.” In contrast to the high-profile lifestyles of some Christian leaders, we see the self-sacrificing lifestyle of Mother Teresa and her order of nuns as they work amidst the squalor of Calcutta ministering to the needs of the poor and the dying, the lowest and the least. God must have a very special room in His heavenly mansion all prepared for Mother Teresa and those like her. Exalted!
Lord, help me to walk humbly before You. Amen!
