READ : Philippians 3:12-21
The title of today’s meditation is a quotation that came into my head and I have found to be an effective tool in my witnessing. It has enabled me to open up conversations with friends, co-workers, patients and their families concerning their faith. It has opened an avenue of spiritual conversation with people who express no belief in Christ. I find this quotation to be symbolic of our Scripture passage which focuses on our heavenly goal. Our materialistic goals are not preparing us for service in heaven. We need to give more thought to what God expects of us in this life as preparation for heaven. I’m not speaking of earning salvation, because that’s already been given us through grace.
I was speaking with an eighteen-year-old young man who had lost his mother. He was having a difficult time coping with life and focusing on any goals. Hanging out in bars or finding himself in trouble was a common occurrence for him. As we spoke, I said, “You know, I have this motto and it’s that today I am one day closer to heaven.” He startled me with the insight of his response. “Boy,” he said, “that’s a pretty good motto to have. It really makes you want to live better, doesn’t it?”
Lord, may our earthly life be reflective of our heavenly service. Amen.
