Any Fool Can Honk

Tests are seldom on anyone’s list of favorite things to do, but they are necessary: math tests, driver’s license tests, job evaluations, medical exams.

In this letter John gives a number of tests to help us determine if we truly belong to God. One test: do we believe that Jesus was human (as well as God)? Second test: do we live by the truth? A third test: are we willing to confess sin and look to the sacrifice of Jesus for salvation? Test #4 is in today’s reading: “…obey his commands…walk as Jesus did.”

The Gallup Poll (now 60 years old) reported that although most Americans say they have faith in God they want the benefits of faith but not the obligations. And church involvement seems to make very little difference in the way they conduct their lives. Ouch! Belief behaves. “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (Jesus, John 15:14).

When bumper stickers first became popular we often saw one that read: “Honk If You Love Jesus.” I liked the one that gave the follow-up: “Loving Means Obeying. Any Fool Can Honk.” Amen!
