Love Others

READ : 1 John 2:7-11

Another test to check if we belong to God! “Whoever loves his brother [sister] lives in the light….” As John says with greater emotion in 4:20: “If anyone says, `I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.”

This is not a new commandment, writes John. Centuries before Moses had written: “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge…but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord” (Lev. 19:18). Yet it was new as Jesus had said: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). That’s the new part: the example of love that Jesus showed.

Jesus loved to the extreme of giving His life for us, as He said, “greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). And Jesus loved not only His fellow Jews but people of all races. I thank God for that; otherwise a Dutchman like myself would have no hope of salvation!

“LOVE: only a word, an idea, but beautiful beyond human capabilities. And only Christ knew, lived the love we talk of when nails tore His flesh and men’s eyes burned with hate and Christ continued to say `I love you’” (Nancy Kauffman).
