READ : 1 John 2:12-17
How confused I was for many years over the Bible’s use of the word world. I read our passage: “Do not love the world.” But, of course, I had memorized John 3:16: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son….” Since God loved the world, shouldn’t I love it too?
Then I learned that there are different meanings for the word world. Sometimes it means “the planet”; sometimes “the people who live on the planet” (as in John 3:16); and sometimes “a system of beliefs and values opposed to God” (our reading for today).
“The Toddler’s Creed” reads:
If I want it, it’s mine
If I give it to you and change my mind later, it’s mine.
If I can take it away from you, it’s mine.
If it’s mine, it will never belong to anybody else, no matter what.
If we are building something together, all the pieces are mine
If it looks just like mine, it is mine
If I had it a little while ago, it’s mine!
Clever, but sad. And, unfortunately, not limited to toddlers. This is what John condemns: “The cravings of sinful man…and the boasting of what he has….” People of Christ, let’s have an attitude adjustment.PRAYER
