READ : 1 John 2:24-28

When our sons were young we never pushed them into sports. But we did have a rule: “If you sign up for Little League this spring you can’t quit in the middle of the season. Once you start, you finish.” Obviously, if an arm was broken he was excused! But we did not want to foster the attitude that if the going gets tough, it’s all right just to bail out.

God is a “stick-to-it” God. He promised never again to destroy the earth with a flood (Gen. 8:21) and He has kept that word. Jesus said: “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37). And He never has. He has never announced: “I’ve been in this salvation business for almost 2000 years and I need a break!” And that is why we worship Him, preach His Word, and trust Him for salvation.

Only those who stay with the team will know the satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best, the benefit of learning through teamwork and losses, and will know the euphoria of winning eventually! Only those who “remain in the Son and in the Father” will know the victory of “what He has promised us even eternal life.”
