Like a Surgeon's Knife

Ron Geschwendt

READ : Hebrews 4:12-13

Of all the books published every year, the Bible is the best seller. Gideons International reports that over a million copies of the Bible are distributed around the world every twenty-seven days. The message of the Bible can make a difference in a person’s life. It contains history, poetry, parables and stories, all of which tell the truth God wants us to know.

The writer describes the Bible as “living and active, sharper than the edges of a sword.” There is a dynamic quality about God’s revelation. It reaches to the innermost part of our being. We may think we can pull the wool over God’s eyes, but there are no secrets hidden from Him. We cannot keep our thoughts to ourselves. The Bible lays bare our soul. It is this Word of God which passes judgment on our feelings and thoughts. As a result the Bible tells us who God is, reveals our sin and compels us to see the need of forgiveness through Christ.

When a carpenter joins the ends of two boards together in trimming a house, he needs to use a square in order to form exact right angles. If the cut is not right, the fit will be crooked. The Bible is the instrument by which every spiritual thought is squared. As the surgeon’s knife cuts away the tumor from the body, so God’s Word excises that which is sinful in us.

We thank You, O Lord, for the Bible that You have transmitted faithfully to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
