The Stone

READ : 1 Peter 2:4-12

Many metaphors are used to describe our Lord. He is the Vine, the Door, the Light, the Bread. In this passage He is the Stone.

The fact that Christ would be a Cornerstone was predicted already in Isaiah 28:16. Those who trust in Christ as the cornerstone of their lives will benefit greatly. He is also called the Capstone (v. 7), the stone at the top of the arch which gives it stability. There are many unstable people in the world. They do not know where they came from, why they are here or where they are going. Christ offers Himself to such people, to provide them stability.

Many stumble over Christ rather than have Him as cornerstone and capstone. Instead of accepting Him in faith, they reject Him. What loss they suffer as a result. But for those who accept Him, He forms the foundation on which each of them are laid as “living stones” (v. 5). Together we are a temple, with Christ as the foundation. Some say they are Christians who believe the Bible, but they refuse to be part of a local congregation. But the Bible speaks of Christians as related together. We are all members of one body. Here too, we are together a temple built on Christ.

This passage also says that together we are priests, offering ourselves as sacrifices for the cause of Christ.

Father, thank You for Christ, the foundation. In His wonderful name. Amen.
