READ : 2 Peter 2:4-9
These verses of Scripture tell us that God punishes some people in His justice and rescues others in His grace. God sent the fallen angels to hell to await their punishment. He sent the flood as a punishment upon the wicked in the days of Noah. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The passage says that this is an example of what God will do to all the ungodly. Some preach that God is so gracious He will not punish anyone. This is false, for the Bible teaches otherwise. Take God seriously, because He takes us seriously.
But the good news is that, while all deserve to be punished, including you and me, God rescues many by His grace. He rescued Lot, who was a spiritual weakling, but trusted in God’s deliverance. Lot set a very poor example. He was more interested in his flocks than in fellowship with godly Abraham. He moved toward the wicked Sodom until he lived within its walls. He still wanted to stay when destruction was imminent. He allowed his daughters to get him drunk. Yet he is called righteous because he put his trust in the promises of God. He was a poor example of a believer, but he did believe and God rescued him. How great the grace of God. Let us believe, but let us live lives more consistent than did Lot. He was rescued, but tragic were the consequences of sin.
Father, thank You for forgiveness. Give us the grace to live godly lives. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
