Believing in God is Enough

John Koedyker

READ : Hebrews 10:15-25

The statistics don’t seem to change much in this area. It’s always over ninety percent of the population saying they believe in God. However, only about half of them attend worship on a given Sunday. In other words, many Americans are saying, “Sure, I believe in God, but let’s not get too serious about church.”

The early church believed in the importance of nurture of faith through worship. The people of the church in Jerusalem “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42). The writer of Hebrews teaches believers not to neglect “to meet together, as is the habit of some” (rsv). Regular worship is a vital part of being a Christian.

For many years, Howard Rutledge had no use for church. His wife had always encouraged him at attend with the family but Howard was always “too busy.” Then he went to Vietnam as a pilot and was shot down in theearly stages of the war. There in a miserable prison, Howard finally realized how empty his life was without God and gave his life to Christ. There are many like Howard. They need our prayers and friendship because believing in God is not enough.

Thank You, Lord, for the privilege of worship. Help us to prepare our hearts as we attand church tomorrow. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
