Only Some are Really Talented

READ : 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

We live in a society that glorifies those who are exceptionally talented. We rave at Michael Jordan’s almost unbelievable skills on the basketball court. We stand in awe of the powerful swing of Frank Thomas as he hits another home run. We watch in amazement as Mariko, the outstanding young violinist, plays the solo of a rousing concerto. Our only response is something like, “Wow! Are these people talented!” The school district where our children attend apparently takes the same approach through a special program called TAG (Talented And Gifted) which singles out kids who do well academically.

Now certainly it is true that people of outstanding ability are talented. You might say that they are spectacularly talented because they can do things that others cannot. When we think that way, however, thetendency is to think that the rest are not talented. But that would not be true from a biblical standpoint.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (rsv). In other words, all God’s children have gifts! We all have at least one and some of us have even more. But regardless of how many talents we have, God gave them to us to use. So let’s use them!

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for gifting each one of us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Help us never to neglect the gifts in us. Make our gifts a source of blessings to those around us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
