You Deserve a Break Today

Romans 3:23-24

A well-known fast food chain has etched into our minds a phrase that is not only easily memorized, it is quite appealing to our egos. The phrase is, “You deserve a break today.” In other words, “Don’t cook tonight. Go out to eat. You’ve worked hard. Take a break tonight. You’ve got it coming.”

It is a natural thing for us to think that hard work and effort ought to bring well-deserved rewards. For example, just the other day I used the phrase in complementing my opponent in a racquetball game. It had been a long and hard-fought volley in which my opponent had to run hard from the back of the court to the front and then from side to side making some great shots. When he finally got the point I said to him, “Boy, Bob, you deserved that one!” When it comes to the Christian faith, however, things are quite different. Try as we may, there is nothing we can do to deserve God’s righteousness and eternal life. Because we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we all deserve condemnation. With regard to our sin-filled life, none of us deserves a break.

However, that is exactly what God gives us! We don’t deserve it, but God gives it to us “freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24). Thanks be to God!

Lord God, we know that we don’t deserve the love You have shown us in Christ. Thank You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
