Whatever Turns You On

READ : 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

We spoke earlier in the month of the importance of the individual in North American society. What benefits the individual and satisfies him is often perceived as good. Therefore, we often hear expressions like, “to each his own,” or “whatever turns you on.”

What seems to turn a large number of people on in our culture is sex. There seems to be an obsession with sex. You can hardly find a television program that doesn’t have at least a few sexual innuendoes included. Talk shows are full of people telling all about deviant and immoral behaviors. Even some PG movies are inappropriate for viewing with the whole family because of sex scenes.

But it’s not just on television and in the movies. Statistics tell the tale of teen pregnancies, live-in couples, extra-marital affairs and broken homes. Obviously, things need to change. But how? Some educatorssay the answer is better educational techniques. Others recommend “protection” and even abortions. The apostle Paul has a different prescription: “It is God’s will,” he says, “that you be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable. . . .” Here again, as Christians, we need to stay close to Christ so that the world doesn’t squeeze us into its mold.

Heavenly Father, help us to be faithful to You and what Your Word teaches. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
