Convict Number One

READ : Genesis 4:1-9

To be remembered for having lived an honorable life is one thing, but to be remembered for being the world’s first criminal is quite another matter! Cain is remembered for being the world’s first murderer! When one hears “Cain” it is almost always equated with “killer.” While the act of taking Abel’s life was terrible in itself, we might ask what was present in Cain’s heart that made him commit such a crime?

I suggest that the root cause of Cain’s crime was the sin of ENVY. Cain did not take Abel’s life because Abel had previously harmed him. He chose to kill him because Abel’s sacrificial offering to God was accepted while his was not. How subtle and brooding is ENVY!

The brothers of Joseph were given to envy; Saul tried to kill David because he was envious of David’s successes and the resulting popularity. Religious leaders in Jesus’ day envied the Master’s popularity with the masses. Envy has not died with the passage of the centuries! Crimes of every sort are committed every day due to envy! Are you envious of the successes of another? Instead of letting envy smolder and possibly erupt in some hurtful act, why not confess it and claim the forgiveness of the Lord. Proverbs 14:30 says: “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Lord, let our longings be for You alone. Grant us Your peace through Christ our Lord. Amen.
