An Oracle Against Damascus

READ : Jeremiah 49:23-27

At the time that Jeremiah lived, Damascus was not a military threat to God’s people as it had been two hundred years before. Under Assyrian control it had become a rich commercial and trade center for caravans from all over the Near East. Called “The Pearl of the East” it was watered by two rivers and enjoyed the kind of lush green beauty that amazed the Bedouin.

Why should this “famous city,” this “joyful city” experience the same destruction by Babylon’s troops as the others against whom Jeremiah prophesied? The only defense that any city, any nation has or ever has had is the protection of the Lord of Hosts. When a people turns away from the Lord and trusts in its prosperity, its military power, its international alliances it has neglected its only sure defense.

Lord, give to us as a nation an awareness of You as the source of all our blessing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
