The People of God Have Not Been Forsaken

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : Jeremiah 51:1-14

Could this be the same Jeremiah who earlier in his prophecy counseled the covenant people to submit to Babylon? It certainly is, but God is about to do a new thing.

Babylon is about to go the way that Assyria, Egypt, and ancient Sumer went. While Jeremiah, living in Jerusalem, is predicting the fall of Babylon, Daniel, living in Babylon itself, is telling King Nebuchadnezzar to “break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed. . . .” (Dan. 4:27). For a short time Babylon repented, but then fell back into her oppressive ways, thus sealing her doom.

There is a warning here to those who are supremely confident in the security of their own nation. We Americans and Canadians need to take special note.

When we forget that the foundation rock of any nation and civilization is acknowledging the sovereignty of the God of the Bible and the Word of His law, we are heading for the same disaster as ancient Babylon. “. . . for there is no other name under heaven . . . by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Lord, we pray for the leaders of government in the U.S.A. and Canada, as well as business, educational and judicial leaders. Help them to bow before Your authority in the way they lead our nations. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
