The Majesty of Creation

Calvin Malefyt

READ : Psalm 8:1-9

Our Triune Creator God is awesome. Think of His handiwork in the heavens. The Hubble telescope reveals as many as 50 billion galaxies. Astronomers estimate there are 400 billion stars for every human being. Professor Owen Gingerich, Harvard astronomer, notes that “the majesty of the universe” implies a plan and a mind, a design and a Designer. The planning is either incredible, he marvels, or there is one huge capricious chance.

Think of God’s creative designs and handiwork on earth. The ecosystem is so delicate that each part is interconnected with every other part. For example, kill a hippopotamus and the river where it fed will fill with weeds.

We are responsible stewards over this creation, but we have trashed it. We have inflicted upon ourselves lethal viruses and bacteria by denuding the rain forests. We have destroyed thousands of kinds of plant life, and have lost invaluable sources of healing.

The Lord calls us to repent of our carelessness and greed. We are accountable to be good stewards. Has He not promised, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).

Father, we are thankful that Your plan of salvation includes the whole cosmos, the entire universe plants and animals, insects and fish, as well as humanity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
