Our Refuge and Our Fortress

Touched by an Angel” is a popular TV program. It frequently describes people who find themselves in impossible situations. An angel (played by one of two women) rescues them from their morass. Why the interest in angels?

The Bible describes situations in which angels have been present. They spoke to Abraham about God’s plans to destroy the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Elisha was once surrounded by military forces directed by King Aram. His servant was terrified but the prophet prayed, “Lord, open his eyes and let him see” the protection provided by thousands of angels.

We little realize how often we may be protected from harm by these unseen beings. We are shielded from plagues and infections; we are kept from harm when we drive on overcrowded highways. I ask the Lord’s protection whenever I travel. Lt. Scott F. O’Grady was shot down over Bosnia. For days he was surrounded by hostile forces seeking to destroy him. When he was rescued he gave thanks to the Lord for his protection. Most news stories edited his words of thanks. We don’t like to admit in our arrogant society that we need Divine help to work through a crisis. Indeed, a prayer for protection from harm can save us from needing to cry for help after we are in trouble.

Thank You, Lord, for creating us a little lower than the angels and sending them as ministering spirits for our salvation. Amen.
