A Person Under Authority

Calvin Malefyt

READ : Matthew 8:5-13

The centurion was a foreigner, with about one hundred men under his authority. This authority was delegated from Caesar, giving him all the power of the state. As long as he represented Rome, he would compel obedience to his commands. He was remarkable in that he cared for one of his slaves. He realized that just as he had military authority, Jesus had spiritual authority. He saw that Jesus, in obedience to His Father, was a channel for the authority of God over sickness and Satan.

Jesus was amazed at his insights, exclaiming, “in no one in Israel have I found such faith.” He responded to the faith of the centurion, bringing healing “in the selfsame hour” (kjv). He showed that such faith was not misplaced.

Jesus gave to His disciples and to us this same delegated authority. There were two aspects to this commission. First, Jesus appointed the Twelve to be “with him,” in fellowship and teaching. Then He sent them out with these words, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples…. I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Matt. 28:18,20).

Jesus, thank You for drawing us to Yourself and giving us authority. Amen
