The Light of the World

Matthew 5:14-16

When we think of the light of the world we think of Jesus as being that light. As the hymn tells us, “The Light of the World is Jesus.” Jesus is indeed the light of the world, but the Bible also tells us we are the light. For when we follow Him we do not walk in darkness, but have the light of life (John 8:12). How good to know that we have this blessing.

In Matthew 5:16 Jesus tells us, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” We as believers are called the light of the world because it is up to us to win for Christ a world that is being smothered in evil darkness. It is important to share with others our love and influence as Christians. God expects it of us. It is God’s light that shines upon us and penetrates our lives, giving us this light and the ability to serve Him.

Already in the Old Testament the promise of light was given. “Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light” (Micah 7:8b).

Can we say, “God is truly our light in darkness”? May we first experience this ourselves. Then may we share it with others. Are our lives reflecting His light, or are we hiding it under a bushel?

Dear Lord, thank You for being our light and our salvation. May Your light shine and glow in us that we may glorify Your name and reflect Your love to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
