In the Beginning

READ : John 1:1-9

Today we begin a study of John’s Gospel, taking us through most of chapter four. We will, however, take a “Christmas break” from December 18- 26 to center our thoughts on the nativity of our Lord.)

“In the beginning was the Word.” By the Word the Almighty expressed Himself in power to deep blackness and hard lava, communicating the urge for order, the germ of greenness, and the design for life.

By the Word the Almighty expressed Himself to the naked upright creature, communicating the urge for moral perfection, the image of the Divine, the desire to conquer and create, and the design for life eternal.

By the Word the Almighty expressed Himself through the prophets to the civilized perverted creatures, communicating hot anger against evil, the need for repentance, and instructions for justice and mercy.

By the Word the Almighty expressed Himself uniquely through the Man from Nazareth, communicating His love for every floundering creature, showing the way through human example, expressing forgiveness through human language, conveying concern through human touch, and bringing hope through human death and resurrection.

The Eternal Word still speaks. You may have to turn down the TV to hear Him, but the still, small voice is there. Hear it this Christmas.

Thank You, Lord God, for the gift of communication, and especially for the way You have communicated to us through Jesus Christ. Amen.
