Three Things We Really Need

READ : John 1:14-18

“The law,” said John, “was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (v. 17). There you have it. Three things we really need.

We need LAW. We need rules. We need moral direction. A lot of folks disagree with that today, but just watch the evening news and you’ll get a whiff of a society that says all moral principles are relative and negotiable.

But we need more than law. Since all of us, to one degree or another, have disobeyed law, God could have imposed justice and none of us would have grounds for complaint. But, instead, God granted GRACE unmerited fa vor through the Word which became flesh and died on our behalf. Since law cannot save, our only hope is grace.

But this Word did even more than become one of us and sacrifice for us. The Word taught us and showed us TRUTH. He taught us about God and in His own person revealed God. He taught us how to live and modeled how to live. He told the truth and was the Truth. Jesus didn’t teach us all there is to know about microbiology or astronomy, but He taught us the secrets of successful living and successful dying. There is no greater or more valuable truth than that.

Help us, Father, to concentrate on the really important things of life: to obey law, to receive grace, and to live truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
