God with Us

LeRoy Koopman

READ : Matthew 1:18-25

In the late 1960s and early 1970s a number of books promoted the theory that in ancient times astronauts from outer space visited our planet and left their marks upon the earth. Erich von Daniken’s Chariots of the Gods?, for instance, says that the stone figures on Easter Island portray spacemen.

The Bible has taught all along that the earth is a visited planet. It received Emmanuel, “God with us” (v. 23) from another realm about 2,000 years ago, and it’s still displaying the evidence of that visit.

In Christ, God translated the melodies of heaven into the Aramaic of the marketplace. Emmanuel!

In Christ, God expressed the love of the ineffable by means of mudballs applied to a blind man’s eyes. Emmanuel!

In Christ, God communicated the wisdom of the ages through stories about farmers seeding their fields and housewives sweeping their houses. Emmanuel!

In Christ, God expressed the universality of His concern through dinner parties with outcasts and stories about heroic underdogs. Emmanuel!

In Christ, God demonstrated His sacrificial love by submitting to one of the most cruel methods of execution ever devised by humankind. Emmanuel!

In Christ, God gave a preview of our resurrection by leaving the tomb on the third day. Emmanuel!

We Thank You, Lord, for the dramatic and clear way You have revealed Yourself to us through Jesus Christ. Amen.
