Happy New Year

READ : Luke 5:36-39

Happy New Year! May 1997 be a year of health and happiness for all who use this devotional. I have chosen the parables of Jesus for our study this month. Although you may be familiar with them, please read each one very carefully. Imagine yourself hearing the words for the first time.

If Luke had not introduced our first parable with the words, “He told them this parable,” we may not have thought of it as a parable. Normally we think of a parable as being an earthly story with a heavenly meaning, but it can also be an earthly illustration with a heavenly meaning. In this parable Jesus tells us of the uselessness of sewing a patch of unshrunken cloth on an old garment or of putting new wine in old wineskins.

As we face the new year, a question each of us might well ask ourselves is: “In 1997 will I merely patch up my old life or do I truly want a new and better one?” Jesus promises us something far better than a patched up life. If we will turn our lives over to Him wholly and totally, He will give us a new wonderful life. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Cor. 5:17). Why live a patched up life when you can have a new one? Decide now to be a new creation in 1997, give control of your life to Jesus Christ.

Father, make me truly new in 1997. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
