READ : Matthew 13:33
One of the shorter parables Jesus told was of a woman who put leaven in a large measure of flour. Given time it permeated the entire lump. That is all there is to the parable. What are we to make of it? For me it is a follow-up of the parable of the mustard seed. Yesterday we were told of the promised growth of the Kingdom of God, today we learn how it will grow. As leaven penetrated and permeated the dough so the gospel of Jesus Christ will penetrate and permeate the world.
The reign of Jesus Christ began with one disciple telling another disciple, who in turn told another and then another until there were twelve and then one hundred and twenty-five and then three thousand, and so the mustard seed was on its way to becoming a tree. It is as the followers of Jesus Christ acknowledge His reign in their lives and share the Good News with those who know Him not, that the Kingdom comes on earth as it is in heaven. No wonder the last words of Jesus are: “And you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Lord, lay some soul upon my heart and love that soul through me; and help me to do my part to win that soul to Thee; so that when we get to the beautiful city and all the saved around us appear, there will be someone there who will say, “It was you who invited me here.” Amen.
