READ : 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
“Pray without ceasing” (v. 17).
“Whisper a prayer in the morning, whisper a prayer at noon, whisper a prayer in the evening. . .” goes the song. We might add, “Whisper a prayer all day long.”
Sometimes we envision prayer as a great effort or a solemn meeting with God. But in Jesus’ life, fellowship with God was as natural as breathing. He talked to His father before decisions, in the storms, when suffering, before great undertakings, and at all times of the day.
Why not practice little prayers when you start off in the car, send your children to school, think of a friend in need, make the beds or prepare meals for loved ones? Pray when you are about to study, write a letter, present a project, visit your parents, answer the telephone, make a decision, plan your vacation, talk to someone you dislike (or like a lot). Send a prayer to the Lord when you go shopping, look for your keys, are about to make love, play games, talk to the boss or a client, answer the doorbell, or take a walk. Think of how the Lord will be honored and your faith journey could be enriched by looking to Him in every circumstance and asking Him to join you. The opportunities are endless!
Let’s try to “pray without ceasing.”
Lord, help us to “practice the presence of God” every hour of the day.
