We Enter into Conflict with Powers of Evil When We Pray

Helen Brownson

READ : Ephesians 6:10-18

“Our struggle is not against enemies of flesh and blood, but against…the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (v. 12).

According to Dr. Bruce Metzger, a gifted New Testament scholar, evidence in the Scriptures for the existence of the devil is of the same order as that for the existence of God. Were we able to pull back the curtains of this present age, we would surely behold something of the spiritual conflict which is so vividly described in the Book of Revelation.

Yet we live blaming people for the evils of the world, and thinking we can overcome those wrongs in our own strength. We fight individuals, not – principalities and powers. We forget that demons stand to oppress us, and suppose that our struggles are only with human beings. Knowing that our Lord overcame the Evil One in the wilderness through prayer, fasting, and the use of Scripture, we still suppose that we can conquer temptation simply through our own will power.

God tells us to PRAY in our times of temptation and to ask for deliverance from Satan’s power, taking up the whole armor of God.

Lord, keep us alert to Satan’s wiles, and help us remember to pray when evil lurks around us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
