Pray Honestly

READ : John 5:1-9

“Jesus said to him…Do you want to be made well?” (v. 6)

Check your prayers. Are you ready for God to answer?

There lay a man at the Pool of Bethesda who had remained there thirty- eight years, praying for a miracle. Why would Jesus say to him, “Do you want to get well?”

Perhaps the man enjoyed lying around, not working, and receiving the pity of those who viewed him. He could act as if he wanted to walk again, but Jesus knew that would mean changing his whole life-style a huge transition in his life! So he asked the question.

Jesus then commanded the invalid at Bethesda to get up, pick up his mat and walk. That seemed impossible, yet it was an action that he had to take by faith so he could experience the answer to his prayers of thirty-eight years.

Christ also calls us to pray honestly. Our pleadings may involve us in steps we aren’t sure we will want to take. Are we willing to part with our self-pity, our rescuing efforts, our passivity, our reticence to confront? To be serious in this matter of bringing our petitions to the Lord can cost us acts of obedience and choices we aren’t sure we can make.

“I cannot choose my lot, I would not if I might; Choose thou for me, O God, So shall I walk aright.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.
