Hope to Go On

READ : 1 Peter 1:3-9

Berend was devastated by the death of his wife Wiechertje. She had been his faithful companion and wise business advisor for over 63 years. How could he go on?

Then one night Berend had a dream. In his dream Berend saw a large sheet of paper descend from heaven. On it was written, “This is my beloved Son. Hold to Him.” A voice asked, “Do you believe that?”

“One hundred per cent!” exclaimed Berend.

Then the paper lifted, and a blazing light traveled from there to a multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art farm Berend envied. The light descended on the farm, and the farm vanished. In its place rose a beautiful green hill, on which stood Jesus. Suddenly there appeared with Jesus a host of believers; Berend had a powerful sense that among them was his beloved Wiechertje.

That dream, says Berend, changed him completely. “That was for me!” he exclaims. “I needed that!” God had showed Berend that what was most important was not his many farms, or his status as one of Canada’s largest dairy farmers, but faith in Jesus. And afterwards, though he still missed Wiechertje terribly, Berend could live again with hope. He knew with certainty that his wife was safe with Jesus, and that some day, by faith, he would join her.

Lord, trusting in You may we live in hope, this day and always. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
