READ : Hebrews 4:12-16
John and Gerda had been living in Canada for only three months when calamity struck. Working in the barn one day, John fell from a height, badly injuring his spine. Gerda, summoned from the house, rushed to the barn and knelt by her husband. Immediately they began to pray, calling to God for help. John started to cry. He begged Gerda to take their two children and return to Holland. He felt sure he was dying, and he did not want Gerda to be left in Canada alone.
It was then that Gerda experienced what she considers a miracle. For at that awful moment, even as John urged her to return to Holland, Gerda knew with certainty that coming to Canada had been the right decision, and that she would stay. Never after did that certainty leave her.
Someone has said that in answering our prayers, God is never early, never late, but always on time. It has also been said that God does not always give us what we want, but He does give us what we need. As John lay in agony on the barn floor, his legs paralyzed, what Gerda wanted with all her heart, what she prayed for, was John’s healing. What God gave her, at this most urgent time, was the conviction she needed to carry on.
Lord, in times of need, help us to trust Your promises. Thank You for Jesus, who understands how difficult trust can be. Amen.
