READ : Psalm 1:1-6
The book of Psalms is a treasury of a wide variety of spiritual experiences. Psalm 1 is an introduction to the whole book, telling us that there are basically two kinds of people: the godly and the ungodly.
Godliness has a negative side. One must avoid having the wrong kinds of friends, for they may lead us astray (v. 1). This is especially true of young people, but it is true of all of us. Do you have a friend who is drawing you in the wrong direction? What should you do about it? Notice also the progressive nature of the wrong kind of involvement. This person first walks, then stands, and then sits with people who influence him in a life of ungodliness.
But godliness has a positive side. Make the Bible your friend, let it shape your view of life, and great blessings will surely follow (v. 2).The result is a stability which many people lack today with sad results (v. 3).
The Bible makes it clear that there is a judgment in this life and at the end of the world. We are responsible to God. Some day we will face Him to give an account of how we have lived our lives. What people think of us is not nearly as important as what God thinks of us. How do we know what He thinks of us? We find the answer to that question in the many descriptions in the Bible of the kind of life God wants us to live.
Father, forgive us and help us live godly lives. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
