The Greatest of Human Beings

Harry Buis

READ : Psalm 8:1-9

The Bible says that we are sinners in the sight of God, utterly unworthy in His sight. It says we are frail creatures of clay. But it also says we were created in His image, so important to Him that He sent His own Son to rescue us at an infinite price.

Many people are satisfied to live in sin because they are not aware of their tremendous potential. David felt small as he looked at the stars (vv. 3-4). Through modern science, we realize the stars are far greater than David could possibly have realized. As a result some people consider human beings to be insignificant in a meaningless universe. Having such a low view, they do not act like children of God. Other factors in modern society also cause people to feel unimportant. They think we are just numbers in the world’s computers. The result is despair.

But we are saved from despair when we realize how important we are to God. Inspired by the Spirit, David realizes that God is “mindful of him.” Therefore human life is valuable and it must be treated accordingly. I am important and so are all human beings. Believing that, I have a different view of myself. I certainly do not want to ruin myself with drugs or other harmful habits. But it also gives me a different view of other people. God cares deeply about what is happening to them, and so must I.

Father, help me to do what I can for human beings who are important to You. For Jesus’ sake. Amen
