READ : Revelation 3:1-6
Can you imagine? Jesus, evaluating a church, says: “You are dead!” That’s what He said to the church in Sardis, a congregation that had a “reputation of being alive”! It probably had many members, good facilities, a full program. It appeared to be thriving.
What was wrong? The gospel wasn’t really there! Jesus was mentioned, of course, but the “sharp edges” of His message were missing. You can imagine how it happened. Not wanting to “offend” or make anyone feel guilty, the church was always “upbeat” and “positive” spreading “warm fuzzies” so they could all feel good about themselves. Words like sin, repentance, holiness these were seldom heard. As a result, it became a gathering place for nominal Christians, so comfortable and inoffensive that nobody no matter how they were living would ever feel out of place! Spiritually the church had become, in the words of Chuck Swindoll, a “morgue with a steeple.”
The solution? Jesus says, “Wake up . . . and remember!” Remember that the gospel is a call to radical obedience and commitment and repent! What a call to revival, both for churches and individuals! Do we just look alive, or are we? Are we truly committed to Jesus, or just wanting to look the part? “Wake up. . . remember . . . obey . . . repent”!
Lord, help us to see ourselves as You see us, to wake up spiritually, and to commit ourselves to You. In Your name. Amen.
