Worthy is the Lamb!

Kenneth Kuiper

READ : Revelation 5:1-14

In John’s vision, the One sitting on the throne holds a scroll in His hand. The scroll represents the decrees of God for the ushering in of His eternal kingdom. The scroll must be opened to put those decrees into effect, thus bringing the kingdom about, but no one in all creation is worthy to open it or even look inside it! No one, that is, except the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who appears as a Lamb that has been slain. The Lamb is Jesus. As He takes the scroll from the One on the throne, a new song of praise breaks out which ultimately fills all of heaven and earth!

What a powerful picture! How it should cause us to bow in worship before the Lamb! He is worthy of worship, for He has “purchased” people, fully paying the price of their redemption with His precious blood. Notice that the price has been fully paid; the “purchase” is accomplished. It is a “done deed.” Notice also that those purchased include people from “every tribe, language, people, and nation.” What an incentive to bring the Good News to every nook and cranny of the globe for God has His people there!

Notice, too, that the Lamb has purchased people not only to save them from sin and its judgment, but to make of them a brand new people a kingdom of priests who will reign with Him in the new creation! Oh, indeed, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!”

O God, to You who sit on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power for ever and ever. Amen!
