Babylon's Fall

Kenneth Kuiper

READ : Revelation 18:1-24

“Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” shouts the angel. “Babylon,” i.e., human society apart from God which reaches its climax under the antichrist, will be “great.” It will achieve amazing feats in science and technology, experience great prosperity, and be a center of commerce, industry, learning, and the arts. But, it will fall!

Notice four things about its demise. First, it will be sudden. In one “hour” its doom will come. When it is at its very pinnacle it will be violently destroyed. Second, this will be God’s judgment. Mankind may try to push God out and build a totally man-centered society, but it won’t work! God is not mocked. Babylon will discover “mighty is the Lord God who judges her.” Third, it will produce both great sorrow and great joy. Sorrow for those who imagine that God can be locked out of His own world; joy for those faithful to God even when Babylon persecutes them. Fourth, it is final. Often, one man- centered civilization replaces another. This, however, will be the last. No new “Babylon” will arise. Its destruction will make way for something brand new the kingdom of the Lamb!

The message to believers? “Come out of her, my people. . . .” (v. 4). At times, we may be tempted to embrace “Babylon,” especially if not doing so means persecution. Let us recall this picture of Babylon’s fall and live for the coming of the new kingdom!

Help us remember that Babylon will fall, Lord Jesus. Amen.
